What Are Dry Film Lubricants?

A dry film lubricant, also known as a solid lubricant, is used on an area where a liquid-based lubricant (such as grease) is unable to work properly. Like the rest of its family, it is used to reduce the effects of sliding friction that can be caused in everyday industry. High-quality dry lubricant provides long-lasting protection against wear, corrosion, and seizing. They also work on materials beyond metal, including plastics, composites, and synthetics.

A dry lube spray or fluid is ideal for extreme temperatures that may cause liquid-based lubricants to boil or freeze. They also work well in high-load applications and reduce out-gassing in vacuum environments. A big benefit of dry film lubricants is that they don’t attract dust and dirt, ensuring cleanliness for medical equipment and food processing.

Choosing Dry Film Lubricant

At Silmid, we can provide a range of dry film products, including dry film spray, pastes, and fluids for all application preferences. Each of these varies in its benefits but can cover a range of tasks from lubricating maintenance shafts and valves to mechanical linkages and turbine engines. Types of dry film lubricants include:
  • Graphite offers excellent conductivity and stability at high temperatures with fast drying.
  • PTFE dry lube (aka Teflon) has a very low friction coefficient and is chemically inert for multi-purpose applications.
  • Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS2 or moly lube) is excellent for high-pressure or load-bearing parts and has great corrosion resistance.
  • Hexagonal Boron Nitride offers impressive durability, heat resistance, and stability with an inert formula.
  • Tungsten Disulphide offers an ultra-thin coating for precision parts and has a large temperature range for extreme heat or cold.
Technical and safety data sheets are available to customers who have an account, letting you see the contents of each lubricant so you know its best uses. Silmid has no order minimums and bulk pricing, so whether you need a small can of dry anti-friction lubricant or a large drum, you can get the right amount.
