What is MIL-PRF-7870?
MIL-PRF-7870 is a United States military performance specification that covers the requirements for a general-purpose, low-temperature lubricating oil.
This highly refined mineral oil-based lubricant (formerly MIL-L-7870) is formulated with modern additives to provide a balance of key performance characteristics suitable for a wide variety of aircraft and military equipment components. Its primary purpose is to ensure lubrication and protection in low-temperature environments, while also offering excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion.
The lubricating oil meeting MIL-PRF-7870 is intended for use in the temperature range of -65°F to +250°F (approx. -54°C to 121°C) and is commonly used for:
- General-Purpose Aircraft Lubrication: Bearings, pins, locks, hinges, and latches on airframes.
- Instrument and Equipment Protection: Lubricating and protecting sensitive instruments and electronic equipment, such as automatic pilots, from corrosion.
- Accessory Systems: Hydraulic systems and gearboxes where this specific low-viscosity, low-temperature oil is approved.
