MIL-PRF-23827

What is MIL-PRF-23827?

MIL-PRF-23827 is a United States military performance specification that details the requirements for a specialised grease intended for use at extremely low temperatures on military and civil aircraft.

This specification (formerly MIL-G-23827) covers a grease formulated with a synthetic base oil (typically a diester) and various thickeners and additives. It is designed to provide excellent load-carrying capacity, superior corrosion inhibition, and exceptional water resistance across a very wide operating temperature range.

The primary use for MIL-PRF-23827 grease is in applications requiring reliable lubrication in extreme cold environments:

  • Aircraft and Instrument Lubrication: General airframe components.
  • Gear and Actuator Screws: Highly loaded gears, worm gears, and actuator screw mechanisms.
  • Bearings: Instrument and gear bearings where precision is critical.

The grease is effective across a broad temperature spectrum, typically from -73°C to +121°C (-100°F to +250°F).

Variations of MIL-PRF-23827

The MIL-PRF-23827 specification covers one grade of grease but includes two distinct types, categorized by their thickener system:

TypeThickener TypeCompatibility Note
Type ITypically soap-based (e.g., Lithium Complex)Do not mix with Type II greases
Type IITypically non-soap/clay-based (e.g., Microgel/organo-clay)Do not mix with Type I greases
The grease meeting this specification is generally identified by a single NATO code: G-354.
