What Is an Epoxy Adhesive?
Epoxy adhesives are often referred to as "structural adhesives" or "engineering adhesives"; this classification also includes polyurethane, acrylic, cyanoacrylate, and other chemistries. The term epoxy refers to a manufactured polymer that hardens when you add a curing agent.
Epoxy adhesives form strong resilient bonds with a variety of surfaces. These high-performance adhesives are used in the construction of aircraft, automobiles, bicycles, boats, golf clubs, skis, snowboards, and other applications where high-strength bonds are required. Another key benefit is that epoxy adhesives are better at heat and chemical resistance than other common adhesives.
These adhesives can be made flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque/coloured, and fast-setting or slow-setting. In general, epoxy adhesives cured with heat will be more heat- and chemical-resistant than those cured at room temperature. The strength of epoxy adhesives starts to degrade at temperatures above 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius).
Types of Epoxy Adhesives
Epoxy glue, adhesives, and sealants can be formulated in many ways depending on project needs.
- One-part epoxy adhesives will cure when you apply sufficient heat and do not require a hardener. Easy to use and handle, they are best for light-duty applications or emergency repairs.
- Two-part epoxy adhesives consist of a resin and hardener that you mix to a certain ratio before applying. The bonding strength is superior to one-part adhesives for heavy-duty use.
- Flexible epoxy adhesives are made for use with flexible materials or when you need shock and impact resistance.
- Conductive epoxy adhesives contain additives to improve electrical conductivity.
- Waterproof epoxy adhesives have additional moisture resistance for marine and automotive use.
