In 1980, Silmid began trading as a supplier of silicone products for the aviation market. Since then, our portfolio has extended to many other chemistries, but silicones still make up a large part of our business. Why Use Aviation Silicone
This synthetic rubber offers many outstanding properties that make it practical for aerospace environments. Aviation-grade silicone has excellent resistance to water, extreme temperatures, pressure fluctuations, shocks and chemicals. Certain forms of silicone form an airtight seal with electrical insulation to protect sensitive components. Silicone can be moulded to precise tolerances for gaskets and other parts or applied as a “quick repair” sealant to fix leaks and join materials.
Silicone has many uses in an aircraft, including sealing critical components in the engine, fuel system, landing gear, cockpit and cabin. It is also used to coat wiring and circuit boards, as well as a caulking material for filling larger gaps.
