What Are Food Grade Lubricants?

These specialty lubricants are used in food processing environments where there is the possibility of incidental food contact. Typically, they are non-toxic lubricants applied to the parts of equipment that are exposed to edible products. Certain food-grade lubricants can also be added to tools and devices like knives and pans. In addition to processing and packaging facilities, they are used on airplanes, in company cafeterias, and other places where food is prepared to help prevent contamination.

Depending on their use, food-grade lubricants may be based on highly refined mineral oils, silicone, vegetable oil, or synthetic additives. They are odourless and tasteless so as not to affect food in any way.

Which Food Grade Lubricant to Use

There are three classifications of food-grade lubrication:

  • H1 lubricants are “above the line” solutions for when the lubricant may be exposed to food. These include machine part lubricants, gasket release agents, antirust films, and tank seals.
  • H2 lubricants are for machines and equipment where there is zero chance of food contact. They still have restrictions such as prohibiting heavy metals, carcinogens, and mineral acids to maintain food-grade status.
  • H3 lubricants are soluble oils used to prevent rust on hooks, trolleys, and similar equipment. If these items contact food, they must be thoroughly cleaned and reoiled.
From there, you’ll find lubricants for many applications, including food-grade gear lubricant, compressor lubricant, vacuum pump oil, sugar-dissolving fluid, and grease cartridges. Order them in the quantities you need with bulk discounts and fast delivery — we have same-day shipping options for urgent demands.
