MIL-PRF-6081

What is MIL-PRF-6081?

MIL-PRF-6081 is a United States military performance specification that covers the requirements for a low-viscosity, mineral oil-based lubricating oil intended for use in jet engines and as a preservative.

This specification (formerly MIL-L-6081) defines a product based on highly refined petroleum oil, fortified with additives to provide excellent oxidation and corrosion protection, a high viscosity index, and effective low-temperature fluidity (via pour point depressants).

MIL-PRF-6081 is considered a legacy or older-generation turbine engine oil, as most modern jet engines utilise synthetic-based lubricants (e.g., MIL-PRF-23699). However, it remains critical for specific applications:

Older/Legacy Jet Engines: Used in specific models of older military aircraft gas turbine engines that were originally designed for mineral-oil-based lubricants.
Fuel System Preservation: Used as a preservative fluid for aircraft engine fuel system components and equipment during storage or extended periods of inactivity.

Variations of MIL-PRF-6081

The MIL-PRF-6081 specification covers three distinct grades of lubricating oil, though Grade 1010 is the most common for service lubrication:

Grade 1010 is the most commonly referenced for engine use and is identified by the NATO Code O-133.

Equivalent Specifications & Codes

MIL-PRF-6081 (specifically Grade 1010) is cross-referenced by international specifications that cover mineral-based turbine and inhibiting oils:

These products either meet or are approved to the MIL-PRF-6081 specification. Please consult the product page and product description for the specific grade/size you intend to purchase to ensure it will be supplied with MIL-PRF-6081 paperwork.
