What is Aerospace NDT?

Non-destructive testing, or NDT for short, is an overarching term for a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and technology industries to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. NDT is necessary for structures and components currently in use, as it allows organizations to identify potential issues or test if repairs meet required standards while keeping the item operational. Companies also use NDT during aircraft construction and product prototyping so they don’t need to destroy the existing structure or item.

There are many aircraft NDT methods, including visual inspection, magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic testing and liquid penetrant testing. Each allows the tester to detect flaws on or beneath the surface so they can be addressed promptly.
