Momentive RTV100 Series

What is RTV100?

Momentive RTV100 Series includes the RTV102, RTV103, RTV106, RTV108, RTV109, RTV112, RTV116 and RTV118 adhesive sealants.

They are one-component, ready-to-use adhesive sealants that are extremely versatile.

What does RTV mean?

In silicones, RTV is an acronym for 'room-temperature-vulcanising' - defining a type of silicone that cures at room temperature.

RTV silicones cure after 24 hours, compared to 72 hours for standard silicones. RTV silicones have excellent adhesion to most surfaces, including metals, plastics and ceramics, while standard silicones have more limited adhesion, best suited to non-porous surfaces such as glass, metals and ceramics. RTV silicones are more flexible than standard silicones, with a temperature range of -53.8°C (-65°F) to 232.2°C (450°F), whereas standard silicones tend to operate at -40°C (-40°F) to 232.2°C (450°F).

Standard silicones are often cheaper than RTV silicones.

What varieties can I use?

RTV102, RTV103, RTV108 and RTV109 are general purpose pastes that may be used for general purpose bonding, sealing, electrical insulation, or formed-in-place gaskets. They can be applied to vertical or overhead surfaces.

RTV106 is a high-temperature paste that may be used for sealing heating elements, gasketing, electrical insulation, and other critical bonding and sealing applications where parts must perform at high temperatures. It can be applied to vertical or overhead surfaces.

RTV116 is a self-levelling sealant for thin section potting, filling small surface voids, protective coating, or electrical insulation where high temperature performance is required.

RTV118 is a general purpose sealant for electrical insulation, thin section potting, or self-levelling protective coatings. It will flow into small crevices and hard-to-reach places.

Data Sheets are kept with individual products. To view the Data Sheet for the RTV100 range, log in at this link and you will be brought to a page where you can do so.

How does it cure?

They cure to a tough, durable, resilient silicone rubber on exposure to atmospheric moisture at room temperature.

The cure process begins with the formation of a skin on the exposed surface of the sealant and progresses inward through the material. At 25°C (77°F) and 50% relative humidity, RTV102, RTV103, RTV106, RTV108, RTV109, RTV112 and RTV116 sealants will form a surface skin which is tack-free to the touch in 15 to 30 minutes.

A 3mm section of adhesive sealant will cure through in approximately 24 hours at 25°C (77°F) and 50% relative humidity. Higher temperatures and humidity will accelerate the cure process, while low temperatures and humidity will slow the cure rate.

As the adhesive sealant cures, acetic acid vapours are released from the sealant surface. The odour of acetic acid will completely disappear when curing is completed.

Momentive announced their change to the product artwork for the Momentive RTV100 series in January 2022.

The older lime green, grey and white packaging has changed to the current dark blue, red and white design.

This updated packaging brands all items in the range as 'RTV100 Series' and not as individual grades as previously. The specific silicone contained within and the batch number is overprinted towards the top of the cartridges and tubes.

The old grades that received the branding update were: RTV102, RTV103, RTV106, RTV108, RTV109, RTV116 and RTV118.
