What Is an Epoxy Hardener?

Adding a chemical compound to liquid epoxy resins or adhesives is often required to start the hardening and curing process. This is referred to as a two-part epoxy, and while they take longer to apply and require more care, they are more durable than a one-part epoxy. Epoxy hardeners are also known as curing agents or catalysts.

By using specific hardeners and changing the ratio, you can control how quickly the epoxy cures. Fast-curing hardeners are excellent for small projects while slow-curing hardeners have more “work time” for pouring and shaping on large projects. The right curing agent will also change the viscosity, add chemical and temperature resistance, and other properties. Hardeners produce the strong, durable epoxy you need for manufacturing and repairs in the aerospace, industrial, automotive and marine industries.

Types of Epoxy Hardeners

Many compounds can be used to catalyse epoxy resins and adhesives, and they are sometimes blended to offer the properties of each. Here’s an overview of the most common hardeners and their best uses.
  • Aliphatic amine hardeners are a fast-acting agent that will cure epoxy at room temperature, making them easy to use and ideal for repairs.
  • Aromatic amines have the slowest cure time of the amines but offer the best chemical resistance and thermal stability for heavy-duty work.
  • Cycloaliphatic amines are an “in-between” in terms of reactivity time and thermal-chemical properties.
  • Anhydride hardeners tip the scales even further towards slow cure time but impressive chemical and thermal performance. You can add accelerators to speed up the hardening process.
  • Phenol hardeners have a slow cure time and require high temperatures but are often used in situations where excellent chemical and oxidation resistance are desired.
  • Thiol or mercaptan hardeners are highly reactive and can even cure at sub-room temperatures but have limited temperature and chemical resistance.
