Modern aircraft paint schemes are now incorporating base coat/clear coat systems. This advanced system combines two separate layers: a base coat, which provides the aircraft’s primary colour or metallic finish, and a high-gloss clear coat applied on top. Multiple colour coats can be used to create complex paint schemes with intricate designs.

Compared to traditional single-stage topcoats, which require around 35 hours to dry, the base coat/clear coat system dries in approximately 20 hours, significantly reducing downtime.

Other benefits include being lighter, faster application due to fewer layers, maintains strong brand integrity, reduced maintenance costs, lower VOC emissions, and a longer-lasting, “factory-new” appearance.

BCCC systems require only one coat per colour, and one layer of clearcoat to deliver the optimum performance.

The BCCC systems are formulated for easier application, requiring fewer coats and reducing drying time, potentially enabling your team to turnaround more paint jobs in less time, while using less material. Aircrafts painted with BCCC look at their best and can be in and out of the paint shop faster, which means less time spent on the ground.

Case Study: UPS B767 9 Year Assessment

In June 2010, Boeing painted a 767 aircraft using Aerodur 3001 and Aerodur 3002 coatings. The gloss levels of the paint were measured at six and nine years after application, showing impressive durability. After nine years, the aircraft maintained an average gloss of over 91 gloss units (GU) at a 60° angle, demonstrating excellent long-term appearance and sustained surface quality.
