Military and Defence

Over time Silmid have gained extensive knowledge of military and defence specifications and standards for armed forces all over the world, including the following;

  • DEF STAN
  • NATO
  • MIL-PRF
  • MIL-SPEC
  • DOD
  • DCSEA

Military equipment can be used in extreme environmental conditions, specs and standards have evolved from the need to ensure proper performance, maintainability and reparability (MRO) and logistical usefulness of military equipment. MRO and logistics were big drivers behind standardisation the need for greater interchangeability during times of conflict, during World War 2 allied forces were busy standardising and cataloguing. The U.S. AN- cataloguing system (Army-Navy) and the British Defence Standards (DEF-STAN) are great examples of this.

Specifications and Standards

What is a specification?

Specifications (often informally referred to as a specs) refers to an explicit set of requirements to be satisfied by a material, design, product, or service. If a material, product, or service fails to meet one or more of the applicable specifications, it may be referred to as being out of specification.

A specification is a technical standard, a technical specification may be developed by various kinds of organisations both public and private.

What is a standard?

A defence standard is a document that establishes uniform engineering and technical requirements for military-unique or substantially modified commercial processes, procedures, practices, and methods.

There are different types of defence standards: interface standards, design criteria standards, manufacturing process standards, standard practices, and test method standards.

United States defence standards, often called a military standard, "MIL-STD" or "MIL-SPEC", are used to help achieve standardisation objectives by the U.S. Department of Défense, the UK uses "DEF-STAN" to set similar standards across its military.
