The Benefits of Changing from Clay Based to Lithium Complex Based Greases

As we have already discussed in Greases Explained, a grease is made up of a mineral or synthetic base oil, a thickener, and an additive package.

Clay-based thickeners, such as Microgel® in AeroShell Grease 7 and 22, have been used in aircraft since the 1960s owing to their good water-resistance and high-temperature properties. They have served the aviation industry well and they will continue to serve, where high temperature performance is required.

However, over time the requirements for greases became more and more complex requiring the use of a wider range of sophisticated additives. At the same time, the customer expectation regarding durability was also rising.

Tips for preparing your aircraft after winter storage

As the covers come off, it is important to ensure all aspects of your aircraft are in perfect condition before your first flight. These simple tips may help in ensuring your first flight is a safe one.

  • Ensure the battery is in good condition and fully charged, ideally using a slow “trickle” charger.
  • Check the fuel for water. The best time to do this is first thing in the morning before the aircraft is moved.
  • Conduct a full walk around of the aircraft, checking the brakes as well as exhausts and inlets for signs of obstruction.

AeroShell Piston Engine Oil W100+

AeroShell Oil W100 Plus has better anti-wear and anti-corrosion than conventional single grade oil, thanks to the same additives for this purpose used in AeroShell Oil W15W-50 Multigrade.

AeroShell Oil W100 Plus is for pilots who prefer a single grade for the camshaft and lifters but want the extra protection against rust, which proves especially useful when the aircraft is idle. This oil can be used in any Continental Motors liquid-cooled and air-cooled aircraft piston engines.

AeroShell Oil W100 Plus available in various sizes

  • The non-ash forming, polymeric additive was developed to help eliminate the harmful combustion chamber and spark plug deposits that form during normal operation.
  • High Viscosity Index Base Oils used in AeroShell W oils maintain their viscosity and help protect engine components more effectively under the high shear stresses that an engine places on lubricants.
  • Provides Compatibility with other approved aircraft piston engine oils. Mixing with other products, however will result in some loss of the superior performance features of AeroShell Oil W100 Plus and W80 Plus.

AeroShell Turbine Engine Oil 560

AeroShell Turbine Engine Oil 560 is a third-generation 5-centistoke synthetic hindered ester lubricating oil, which offers reduced coking, improved wear resistance, and all-round commercially viable performance for modern jet engines. Formulated to cope with demanding operating conditions, ASTO 560 has consistently delivered the right balance of performance and cost efficiency to the global aviation industry for the past 25 years.

ASTO 560 is developed based on a deep understanding of commercial aviation requirements. The result is a versatile lubricating oil proven to deliver cleaner engines, more reliable operational performance and longer maintenance cycles.

  • Reduced coke formation
  • Fully compatible with other approved oils
  • No adverse effect on elastomer seals
  • Good oxidative and thermal stability
