Reliability Begins Here

A single loose fastener can lead to equipment failure, increased maintenance and costly downtime. Whether manufacturing products, maintaining machinery or repairing equipment, reliable threaded assemblies are essential.

Traditional mechanical locking devices can leave gaps between threads, allowing movement caused by vibration and thermal expansion. LOCTITE Threadlockers fill the gaps between mating threads to help prevent loosening, while also sealing against corrosion.

Suitable for a wide range of fastener sizes and applications, LOCTITE Threadlockers provide a reliable alternative to traditional mechanical locking methods and can help simplify inventory and maintenance processes.

For more than 70 years, LOCTITE Threadlockers have been used across manufacturing, industrial maintenance and repair applications to improve the reliability of threaded assemblies.

How to Apply LOCTITE Threadlockers

A threadlocker is a liquid adhesive designed to secure fasteners from loosening between maintenance cycles. For over 60 years, LOCTITE have been producing a variety of threadlockers suitable for a wide range of applications. These so-called “red bottle” products can be applied in place of conventional fastening methods and help to prevent loosening of threaded assemblies.

How to Apply LOCTITE Instant Adhesives

The blue bottle LOCTITE instant adhesives have been around for over 50 years. Referred to technically as cyanoacrylate adhesives, and commonly referred to as superglues, these products are used when time is of the essence. Instant adhesives cure very quickly when confined between surfaces, exhibiting excellent adhesion on most substrates and especially on small to medium sized parts.

How to Select the Right Threadlocker

Choosing the right threadlocker depends on factors including fastener size, required strength, application method and whether future disassembly is required.

Explore the different LOCTITE Threadlocker grades and find guidance to help you select the right product for your application.

LOCTITE Threadlocker Chart & Selection Guide

Choosing a threadlocker comes down to three questions: how strong does the bond need to be, does the fastener need to come apart again, and does the task call for a specific specification? This guide gives you a complete LOCTITE threadlocker chart, explains what each strength and color means, and shows how to select the correct grade for aviation and MRO applications.

FAQs about LOCTITE Adhesive Products

How do I choose the right LOCTITE adhesive for my application?

Start by identifying the materials being bonded, the required bond strength, and the environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, chemical exposure, vibration). Also consider the specific application type—such as threadlocking, gasketing, sealing, or structural bonding. Refer to the product’s Technical Data Sheet (TDS) or contact our team of experts for tailored recommendations.

What’s the difference between red and blue LOCTITE threadlocker?

Blue LOCTITE (e.g., 242, 243) is a medium-strength threadlocker designed for fasteners that may need future disassembly using standard hand tools. Red LOCTITE (e.g., 262, 271) is high-strength and intended for permanent assemblies; removal usually requires localized heat and tools.

When should LOCTITE not be used?

Avoid using LOCTITE on plastic parts not rated for its chemistry, on assemblies requiring frequent disassembly when using high-strength formulas, or on surfaces that cannot be properly cleaned or prepared. Always review the product’s TDS for material compatibility, cure requirements, and application limitations.

What’s the difference between LOCTITE 242 and LOCTITE 243?

LOCTITE 242 and 243 are both medium-strength, blue threadlockers. However, LOCTITE 243 is a newer, upgraded version that is oil-tolerant and primerless. It performs reliably even on surfaces with slight contamination. LOCTITE 242 is more traditional and requires cleaner surfaces for optimal performance.
