What are the benefits of AeroShell Turbine Engine Oil 560?

During the early stages of turbine engine development, mineral oils were used to lubricate bearings, gears and other components within the engine. As jet engines evolved through newer technology, these mineral oils were unable to cope with the increasing demands caused by higher thrust and compression, showing a lack of stability and thermal degradation over time.

Synthetic oils were introduced in the 1940’s to cope with this change, but jet engine development continued and higher temperatures were reached during operation. This led to further  advancements in jet oil, and ultimately a high thermal stability specification – MIL-PRF-23699 Type HTS.

AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 is a third generation 5mm²/s synthetic oil which exceeds all requirements set out under MIL-PRF-23699 Type HTS. But with a number of other oils on the market, why is AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 any different?

Lower Coking Propensity

Coke is the term used to describe solid forms of carbon inside an engine. This occurs when the temperatures within the engine exceed the stability limit of the engine oil, and the higher the temperature, the blacker and harder the coke that forms. If these deposits then shed, there is a risk that filters in the engine system can become blocked.

AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 excels in the HLPS test used to measure coke formation in engines, meaning your engine remains cleaner even at the highest temperatures.

Optimum Elastomer Compatibility

The anti-oxidant additives contained in most HTS oils have a negative impact on elastomer seals, degrading them over time through swelling and ultimately leading to higher oil consumption. AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 is elastomer friendly, showing optimum elastomer compatibility compared to HTS alternatives when tested at 24 hour and 120 hour limits.

Lower Oil Consumption

Through lower coking propensity and optimum elastomer compatibility, AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 drastically reduces oil consumption over time. A test conducted on a fleet of 10 aircraft showed a 10-15% reduction in oil consumption, and with it a reduction in total operating cost.

Easy Oil Changeover

AeroShell Turbine Oil 560 is compatible with all other MIL-PRF-23699, although customers should refer to their engine manufacturer’s manual for oil changeover recommendations.
